ZZ Zdravje

The healthcare institution ZZ Zdravje is the largest provider at Medicinski center Ljubljana – most of the clinics at the centre operate under it, from family medicine and dentistry to specialist examinations and diagnostic imaging. Some clinics work under the public health insurance scheme, others are self-pay; each clinic states what applies to it and where to book.

What operates under ZZ Zdravje

The foundation is family medicine and paediatrics, alongside dentistry with oral hygiene and a clinic for implantology and oral surgery.

The specialist side is the broadest. It includes cardiology, neurology with a headache clinic and a cerebrovascular disease clinic, pulmonology, dermatology, urology, ENT, ophthalmology, endocrinology, thyroidology, oncology, gynaecology with pregnancy monitoring and a breast disease clinic, and gastroenterology with gastroscopy, colonoscopy and a proctology clinic.

The surgical side covers abdominal surgery, a neurosurgery clinic, a minor procedures clinic and the treatment of varicose veins. Orthopaedics is divided by joint: shoulders separately, and hips, knees and feet separately.

Diagnostic imaging covers X-ray and ultrasound of the abdomen, the neck vessels, the neck, and soft tissues and small joints. Movement rehabilitation is provided by physiotherapy and kinesiology.

That leaves the preventive and supporting side: Redni servis as an in-depth preventive check-up, occupational, traffic and sports medicine, a nutrition and lifestyle clinic, and a psychiatry and psychotherapy clinic.

Where a referral applies and where it does not

Family medicine, paediatrics, dentistry, gynaecology, and gastroenterology with gastroscopy and colonoscopy work under the public health insurance scheme of the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia (ZZZS). In these clinics treatment can be covered by compulsory health insurance, and a self-pay option is also available at all of them.

The remaining clinics are self-pay. There you do not need a referral and you book yourself; you cover the costs yourself or through additional insurance, if you have it and if it covers self-pay specialist examinations.

If you have a referral, do not put it aside before checking how the clinic you need works. A referral does not lose its value just because the same examination is also available on a self-pay basis. What applies to each clinic is stated on its page.

How to choose between the two routes

Family medicine, paediatrics, dentistry and gynaecology need no referral: the visit is covered by insurance if your chosen personal doctor, dentist or gynaecologist is at ZZ Zdravje. For a specialist clinic under the public scheme, such as gastroscopy or colonoscopy, you book with a valid referral from your chosen personal doctor (GP); bring the referral and your health insurance card.

Without a referral, the self-pay route remains. It is also useful when you do have a referral but want a consultation sooner, a second opinion, or treatment at a clinic that does not work under the public scheme.

A referral to a specialist is issued by your chosen personal doctor. If you are registered with a doctor elsewhere, you receive a report and a recommendation at the self-pay examination, and you then arrange a referral covered by insurance with your own doctor.

How booking works

Appointments cannot be booked on this page. Each clinic has a link that takes you to ZZ Zdravje's booking; some lead directly to the page of the individual clinic, others to general booking.

This website does not publish the schedules of individual clinics. You find out when a clinic is open and when an appointment is free when you book. The centre's opening hours are given in the page footer.

Cancel or reschedule an appointment the same way you booked it. A freed-up slot is almost always taken straight away by someone who is waiting.

For general questions about the centre, call 01 436 82 17. For questions about a specific examination, contact the clinic you are booking with.

What to bring with you

Reports from previous tests relating to your problem and a list of the medicines you take regularly. For treatment on referral, also the referral and your health insurance card.

Do not leave out older reports. A comparison with the previous state often tells more than a single measurement and saves repeating a test.

If you have chest pain, severe shortness of breath, sudden weakness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or impaired consciousness, or strong, sudden pain, do not wait for an appointment – call 112.
